Digital Mentor Program/Picture Book

The Digital Mentor Program/Picture Book is designed for the writer or writer-illustrator who has exhausted local resources and feels in need of something extra. This six-month program is meant to help you reach the next level in multiple areas of craft. The hope is that by the end of the mentor program that all mentees will be prepared to take the next stop in their writing/illlustrating journey, be it continue to revise or submit to editors and agents. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN (see forms below).

MENTORS:  Rick Walton, Tammi Sauer, Laura McGee Kvasnosky, Shutta Crum and Mike Boldt. Download mentor bios and submission preferences to prepare your submission.

COST:  $350 (due in two installments:  a $50 deposit due at time of application; balance of $300 due by February 15 if selected for the program). If your manuscript is not selected, your $50 deposit will be refunded. 

NOTE: The Digital Mentor Program/Picture Book DOES NOT guarantee a path to publication or representation by an agent. We urge you to sign up for this event if you are serious about learning the craft of writing with an experienced mentor who is able to give you 1:1 feedback.


EXTENDED January 15 – Mentee applications due

February 10 – Mentors submit their choices for mentees

February 15 – Manuscripts (and thumbnails for illustrators) due to mentors

The week of March 8th –14th video chat visits with editorial notes submitted to the mentee a day or two prior

May 10th – Mentee’s rewrite due to mentor (illustrators include a dummy)

The week of June 8th – 14th video chat visits with editorial notes submitted to mentee a day or two prior


In submitting to the mentorship program you agree to:

Pay $350 (less your deposit) by February 15, 2014.

Commit to the program from January to June.

Submit a full manuscript (illustrators should include thumbnails) to your mentor by February 15, 2014.

Come ready to learn and get as much out of the program as possible, e.g. read your editorial letters with a professional eye and approach each virtual chat session with questions.

Establish communication your mentor along the DMP/PB timeline and your mentor’s preferred video chat platform, e.g. Skype, FaceTime, or Google Hangout.

Participate in the post-conference survey to let us know how the program works. 

DMP/PB is open only to members of the SCBWI CA North/Central region for the first month from the time registration is announced (regional residence will be verified). After that time, if the program is not filled, members of other regions may sign up. There are no refunds given unless mentor must cancel.

To apply as a candidate for SCBWI CA North/Central’s 2014 Digital Mentor Program/Picture Book, submit  the following list of documents.  Mentors will choose applicants with whom they will work. All writers will be notified of mentors’ decisions via email no later than February 10.

All documents must be double-spaced. Use Arial or Times New Roman font. 1” margins on all sides. Failure to comply may lead to forfeiture of application.

INFORMATIONAL PAGE [lastname_info.doc] – one (1) page — Give a little information about yourself; share why you want to be a part of this program

MANUSCRIPT PAGES [lastname_pages.doc] – For the project you will work on during the mentorship program

ILLUSTRATORS — submit thumbnails with your manuscript pages [lastname_thumbnails.doc or jpg]. You will submit a dummy after your first video chat session.

Submit the documents in a ZIP file to with DMP/PB submission in the subject header.
