Picture Book Bootcamp

featuring editor Ariel Richardson of Chronicle Books

Writing for Children Illustration

Hello Fresno!! We’ve booked a top-notch editor to talk to you about what it takes to get your board book and picture book manuscripts shiny and ready for submission! Children’s book editor Ariel Richardson of Chronicle Books will share the most common feedback she gives when she critiques manuscripts at SCBWI conferences—the importance of the title for conveying hook, word count, illustration notes, leaving room for illustrations to do some storytelling, storybooks vs picture books, mentor texts, the importance of backmatter, and more. She’ll provide concrete examples to learn from.

And…snacks! 🙂

Ariel will offer a limited number of written critiques (picture books, novelty books, and board books only) FOR SCBWI MEMBER REGISTERED ATTENDEES ONLY! She is offering attendees the additional add-on critique for a reduced rate of only $50! (It goes as high as $125 at other conferences.)  Sign up early to secure your spot.

The even better news is, editor Ariel Richardson will be accepting manuscript submissions from any and all attendees after the workshop, member or nonmember! (PLEASE don’t bring them with you–she will not accept ANY manuscripts handed to her. You’ll mail them to her at the address she provides, after you’ve revised based on what you learn.) You won’t want to miss this one.

We are also excited to announce that Uma Krishnaswami, author of Step Up to the Plate, Maria Singh and Bright Sky, Starry City will be the afternoon speaker at this event, AS A FREE ADDED BONUS, thanks to the generosity of the Arne-Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature! Plan to stay after Ariel’s presentation for a no-host lunch break before Uma’s talk begins at 1pm.
